Stunts, Tricks and Tips

Here are just a few things I made and use to make the domino topple more intresting.

This is just a simple bridge. I have several like this. Some are smaller then others and some like this one you can actually have dominoes run underneath.

This is a pendulum. I have a small fishing weight at the end of a string which sits on top of a domino. When that domino falls, the fishing weight swings hitting another domino. I have several of these. This one is the smallest (shortest) one of them all.

I have many steps like this one. Some are bigger and taller some are smaller. This one has a V channel of plastic hooked to it and I put a ping pong ball on top. When the dominoes goes up stairs and hit the ping pong ball. The ball rolls down the v channel and knocks down more dominoes. The pictures below show what happens afterwards.

This is another set of steps that I hooked a Hot Wheel track to. I then fixed it so a Hot Wheel car will roll down the track when hit by a domino. just watch out how far the car goes and not wipe out dominoes not ready to be knocked over yet. The pictures below show the afterwards.

Another set of steps in which I took a long domino and hinged it to the top of one set of steps. When the dominoes goes up the steps and the one on top knocks down the tall step which falls and connects to the other set of steps making it a bridge, it hits the domino on the other side and they all fall. This is good as you can have dominoes run underneath the bridge.

I have many steps in which you can connect a long peice to make a long bridge I have many lenghts from about 8 inches to 36 inches. The picture below shows how the dominoes on the bridge can fall first and the ones underneath can fall later.

.
I also use the steps to let the dominoes fall on a teeter-totter. As the top one falls and hits the teeter-totter it lefts the one resting on the teeter-totter which leans against another domino and then knocks it down.

This is a different kind of step. The only one I made. The steps are taller and takes less wood to make. I have this one so when the top domino falls it falls on the ones below and then they all fall down. Some times it takes several tries to get to find the right spot to set up the dominoes below.

Here I made some spinners. The first ones this size I made from Legos. But I like playing Legos with my Grandson and did not like to make spinners then tear them apart later. I made a bunch out of wood. I used heavy wood for the base and lighter wood for the spinners. I used rivets to make the axle for the spinners. I ground the rivet nail down so it spins in the outside part. I then drilled a hole just large enough in the block that you have to tap the rivet nail in. I also drilled a hold in the spinner to hold the outside part of the rivet. I then put the nail through the spinner in the rivet ring and tapped it into the base. This is neat as you can make bunch of straight rows and then place spinners on each end. The more rows you have the better the affect.
.
These are the first spinners I made. They are long and is real easy to make. Just drill a hole larger then the nail in the spinner and a hole just under the size in the base. I used a washer underneath and on top of the spinner before I drove the nail in. Use a nail with a head.

I made this slide or ball guide from two peices of 1/4" MDF and put a spacer in the bottom so a ping pong ball will roll down it. The first picture shows how I stack the dominoes up, then I slide the triangle peice into place to hide the stacked up dominoes. You don't see the stacked up dominoes in the second picture. I then place a ball on top of the triangle peice so it rest on the top part of the top domino. As the dominoes fall and release the ball, it rolls to the bottom knocking down more dominoes. The picture below show the final result.

This one is real simple. I took two blocks of wood, drill a small hole in each one. I ran a heavy peice of piano wire through both blocks. (make sure the hole is bigger than the wire). I then bent one end of the wire at a 90° to make a tail. As you can see, the domino falls and hits the tail on the wire and pushes the wire through the holes. On the other end is a domino right up against the other block. So the wire will push the domino down. I should have made the block a little higher then I could have dominoes go underneath the wire also.

I used a famous kids game called "Connect 4" for this trick. I made two blocks to raise up the "Connect 4" game board. High enough that I have a thin peice of wood underneath to hold the chips in the slots. I stack up two dominoes in the center to hold up the block of wood that is holding the chips in. I then had to use a heavier domino to knock down the two dominoes that are holding up everything. Since that domino was bigger I had to make smaller ones until I got to a regular size one. The heavier dominoes I made from 1/2" acyrlic. You can do many things with the "Connect 4" game. Make a ramp underneath so the chips would actually knock down the dominoes.
